I spit out my dissatisfaction in a clump of sour bile. It stains the pavement with a star of predictability.
I lean my face against the transparent wall, peering through the one-way window of removed voyeurism.
Scores of overweight children dance inside. Their disgusting bodies writhing with entitlement and self-delusion. It's a horrifying bastardization of a Wonka scene. The entire store is tinged with green. I watch kids of all ages cram their maws full of excess. They grab and glom and gobble in gluttony. Some are ill at the gills.
They don't slow down.
They blame the evacuation of belly and bowel on circumstances outside their control. Retroactive justification gasped out between bites of hedonism. They meant to do that, they claim. It's just the way they are, they say. It can't be helped, they lament.
I hear the creak of abandoned swings on the playgrounds of activity and discipline. I weep scalding tears at their exalted apathy.
I watch self-destruction masquerading as contentment. I wonder how many of them will grow sick of being sick.
I wonder, too, how many will simply lay down and accept their easily-earned prize. I watch some grow comfortable with being uncomfortably distended. I listen to slothful lyrics lauding their revelry. I hear words I comprehend but phrases that don't make sense. The cacophony of noise is self-reinforcing. Every voice adding to the din of acceptance, hoping to drown out the deafening echo of the truths within each of them.
The glass pane I watch them through mimics their reflections- from inside their candy store- back at them perfectly. But I only see the vision of blank opacity in their eyes when they look in my direction.
