I left uncommonly early in the day, so to race the rain. Puddles shrinking under the chilly breath of California winters. A small pack of stragglers huddled together in a parking lot, waiting for something ineffable by a barely fueled fire. I passed them by.
I returned to an old abandoned school, and scaled walls with aging muscles. An obese squirrel watched me cat-walk across a fence, unimpressed. I returned to my fallout shelter to an unexpected, but not unwelcome, silence.
