Phone calls from strangers in the middle of the night. Ignoring the ringing is impossible--
it never stops unless answered. A disguised voice asking for help with gardening, or babysitting, or cleaning. "Be sure to wear your uniform", they always say. A Desert Eagle is always waiting behind the dumpster in the back alley. One dozen rubber masks shaped into uncanny valleys. A rooster with teeth, a rat without hair, a zebra with a long black mane. They all smell like flecks of copper, and the stale sweat of fear. With only eyeholes, every breath is louder than the angry shouts, or the clustered gunshots. Waking up in sheets drenched through with cold, and unremembered bruises. Please let these be dreams.
