A collection of tiny green sticks, held at right angles to each other, perched on a low stone wall. The insect regards me warily with fragmented eyes before waddling away. At the end of the partition, a small, scuffed, wooden block. A rainbow of varied letter "S"s etched on each side. Curiously out of place in the trash-strewn courtyard. I pocket it on my way to the river. An insistent breeze energizes the trees. Waist deep in runoff from the mountains, I watch bloated, sunburned bodies float downriver. A duck with a slender red bill and ragged brown mane watches as well. Skin pickling in the ruffled current, I bid Miss Meganser adieu as the world drowns in a red and purple sunset.
