Driving in reverse through empty country roads. The scenery a single wheat-and-emerald snapshot stretched over hours. Driving the longest way, around misplaced strawberries and too-similar names. Arrival during the fever pitch of the afternoon. Thin lungs failing under granite skies. The taste of sun-stained iodine in large-mouthed bottles. Pools clear enough to magnify light into pinpoint suns. Cacophonous waterfall shouts under the mist. Shins scraped on illusions. The disdain of humanity trapped behind my molars, even in the blessed middle of nowhere.
