Unfiltered daylight on accidental sunburns. The roads back here are easier to find, this year. Hands heavy with u-shaped plastic, and clay-bullet intent. The slow ascent to heaven one step at a time. Finding flat planes to shear my calves upon. Large pink ovals, freckled with bloodlines. Songbirds singing unchallenged in the shrubtree sky. The crash of water sliced free by fires. Snow runoff turning warm over the shoulders. Making mental notes of abandoned campsites. Leftover charcoal; a rock-free clearing; a blackened, rusted can. When the world collapses, there will be others.
