It was one hundred degrees outside in the beginning of fall. I ran too many miles to the local hardware store. I purchased pliers, nails and antiseptic. All the items needed for my usual home surgery.
A piece of me melted on the way back. I pried coral shards out of my occipital plate with a claw hammer. Fragments of red and pink ideas that glistened in the scalding sun. I hadn't put myself on the laceration table in a long time. The heat didn't distract me with slipperiness as much as I thought it would. I washed my hands of sweat and sunblock and prepared to record my diagnosis.
